Linux wouldn\'t save you from hardware failure ;)
Also Firefox is known to lock it\'s own profiles... wee :D
Anyway, what a mess.
I wasn't going to install Linux to solve my hardware problems. I mentioned that I might install it because if I'm going to reinstall my OS, why not give Linux a try just for the hell of it; I'd just end up reinstalling Windows, I know, but I thought it might be fun for a bit :)
I tried, once. Then I found out ATI Driver support for Linux is lacking to say the least and found myself running Vista the other day (just for the hell of it ;)). Then I found out ATI Driver support for Vista was lacking as well.
Then I bought an nVidia card, and everything was well :P
Well, a bit of an update. I called Maxtor and they verified that the drive was still under warranty, so I went ahead and did an advanced RMA (basically, they send me a new drive and I have 30 days to send the old one in). Hopefully, this was all just a fluke, and the new drive won't bail out on me...

Hardware problems suck. My PC has been down for just over a year because I don't take the time to replace the motherboard or processor (I don't even know which one is dead :P).
